Achieving Cinematic Soft Light with Godox’s F200Bi LED Mat

The Godox KNOWLED F200Bi flexible LED panel is an essential tool in my lighting arsenal. As a cinematographer, I need to be prepared for a variety of situations—whether it’s a simple interview, a feature scene, or a music video. Ever since I got it, this LED mat has been my go-to choice and the one I most recommend for achieving a soft light source.

The main features of the flexible LED panel are its compact size, light weight, battery operation, and variable color temperature ranging from 2700 to 8500 K. I can set it up on a light stand, mount it securely above a window, or even under the ceiling. The battery operation provides mobility, allowing me to work without tangled cables and in any location. While V-lock batteries are quite expensive, especially with a charger, the mobility they offer is worth the cost. The controller accepts two batteries and runs for about four hours on them. I have four batteries and a four-channel charger, which nearly doubles the overall cost. However, I chose not to skimp on this aspect.

By adjusting the color temperature, I can not only match the existing light but also create distinct color separations. Lighting the subject in a different color from the background produces an attractive image, which I find very appealing. The rectangular shape of the panel creates a natural-looking catchlight in the actor’s eye, resembling the reflection from a window. This effect works particularly well in interior shots.

The Godox KNOWLED F200Bi flexible LED panel also has a few unique features that I really appreciate. It’s waterproof, making it suitable for natural rain or snow, artificial rain scenes, poolside shots, and any wet conditions. The included softbox softens the light nicely, and the grid allows you to control the spread of the light. The controller and power supply are housed together, reducing the hassle of organizing cables.

Godox has thoughtfully positioned the power cable connection on the side of the controller instead of the bottom. This gives you the option to hang the controller, mount it on the included bracket, or place it on the floor. The display is large and easy to read, allowing you to control the brightness and color effortlessly. There’s also a handy mobile app that lets you control the panel. This is particularly useful when you have multiple units or when the panel is mounted in a hard-to-reach place. Even when I’m sitting behind the camera, I can control it without moving from the comfort of my seat.

Another important consideration is the sheer lifespan and sturdiness of both the panel and controller. The mat is designed to be folded in half rather than rolled, making it less prone to damage when stored. Unfortunately, this means you need a relatively large bag, but for me, this is a sensible compromise. The power supply, on the other hand, has a solid metal housing that ensures durability.

I prefer to use the F200Bi because it offers a lot of light output in a reasonable size. In some situations, it can cut through sunlight and handle longer distances effectively for wider framing. Of course, it won’t overpower the midday sun outdoors. However, indoors, it performs flawlessly when used alongside window light, and its power is sufficient. The LEDs emit very high-quality light, beautifully reproducing colors, including skin tones. Unlike older generations of LEDs, it doesn’t cause blue or green skin tones. I also didn’t notice any flickering at high frame rates. Additionally, its size (60 × 60 cm), combined with the softbox, produces soft light with a relatively large surface area.

Overall, the concept of the flexible LED panel is a game-changer for me. It has made me rarely use ordinary lights as a key light in indoor shots. Even Bowens mount lights are way less useful to me nowadays – while you can mount a softbox on them, it ultimately results in a bulky setup I’d rather avoid. This doesn’t mean regular fixtures can be completely replaced by panels – I often use them with a spotlight attachment or standard reflector, mainly for hard light. However, the bottom line is an LED panel as a soft light source is a great choice for both YouTubers and feature cinematographers.

Here are two practical examples where the Godox flexible LED panel was essential. The first is my vlog from the OFFmaster ONline channel, where I used the panel as the main key light. I positioned it close and at an angle to achieve the desired lighting effect. The warm color temperature provided an eye-pleasing result. Since all the light in the scene was artificial and I didn’t use any natural window light, I used a grid to control the spill onto the background. The light output was set to a minimum. The result was perfect for me: clear eye light, smooth tonal transitions on the face, pleasing skin tones, and a contrasting, atmospheric mood for the scene.

The second example is the music video for Julia Jarząbek’s song “The End of the Saint.” Light played a central role here, creating flares, but I still needed to illuminate the singer with a key light. For this, I used the Godox F200Bi flexible LED panel. It operated at full power and without a grid to cut through the light from the windows in both close-ups and wide shots. I set it to a warm color temperature to achieve a ‘teal & orange’ effect. The warm light from the strong LED panel provided fantastic color separation against the cold background in daylight conditions. This simple setup achieved a beautiful visual result. A spotlight modifier and flaring lenses completed the effect.

To sum up, anyone who knows me knows that my top recommendation for a first and essential purchase is a flexible LED panel. Out of all the panels I own, the Godox is the one I use the most. Although it’s not the cheapest, it meets all the important criteria for being a valuable tool for a dedicated filmmaker. For me, it’s been a game-changer and has made my job much easier. I highly recommend it to anyone working with lighting. It’s versatile enough for most film scenes.
